beauty: the perfect summer base duo for oily skinned girls

It takes a lot to impress me in the base stakes.

I am one oily skinned gal  and have been for years. I’ve talked a lot about it on my blog and recently wrote about how my skin is changing slightly as I’m getting older and how, although I’m still oily, it needs more moisture than it used to. Foundation and base products are something I’ve always, always struggled with – team it with my want for minimalism and fresh, natural looking skin, it’s a bit of a battle. Over the years I’ve tried everything to keep my face in place – and although I find the likes of Nars Sheer Glow and Estee Lauder Doublewear do the job, they’re just too full coverage for my taste and especially for summer. In all my testing and trialling, I’ve learnt the value in prepping and priming the skin and these days, a primer (and a good setting spray) are vital to my routine. I always ensure I moisturise well before I apply any make up so my skin is hydrated to allow for a smooth base application, but I make sure I give my skin ample time to drink up my moisturiser before applying any make up – I’d say I leave around 30 mins, whilst I eat my breakfast, to make sure it’s all absorbed. This is a trick I read years ago and I swear by it – if you suffer from oily skin, I’d recommend trying this rather than slapping on your moisturiser and then foundation straight away.

If anyone asks me how they can keep their base in place longer, I’ll always ask if they use a primer. It’s become a step in my routine that I swear by and I’ve tried my fair share. I love the Laura Mercier primers (but hate the price tag) and dabbled in an Estee Lauder one for a while. I’ve tried drugstore which all break me out (particularly the Rimmel one) and I’d been looking for something better for a while. I need something that’s going to continue to hydrate my skin whilst keeping my make up mattified – letting those natural oils shine and keeping the excess at bay! I wrote about my first purchase from The Ordinary here – when I picked up my first anti aging product, and when I had a £5 ASOS voucher to spend, I was drawn back to the brand. I noticed they did a few primers and reading their descriptions, I opted to try the High-Adherence Silicone Primer. Let’s start with the price – it’s £4 (£4!!) for 30ml which beats the lower-end highstreet prices here in the UK (I recently paid £10 for a L’Oreal primer). The whole brand is super well priced and everything seems to get such glowing reviews! The description says it’s a primer that hydrates but mattifies as well as ensuring your make up stays put. And that certainly ticked my boxes! I had high hopes, and after using this product for around three weeks now (and not breaking out – hurrah!), I can safely say it does all three of those things. I’ve used it with a range of bases, from low end to high end foundation and lighter options like tinted moisturisers and BB creams. I’m so pleased I’ve found something so great for that price!

The next discovery was a pure accident, when I was dabbling in some alternative bases to my usual as I’ve got myself a little bit of a tan. I’d picked this up when I was last in the USA and it’s the Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturiser. I went to ULTA wanting to buy the foundation but it was too heavy for me and so I stumbled across this. I’ve always loved it (it’s light but glowy and matte enough) but when I teamed it with The Ordinary primer? All my good skin days had come at once! The level of shine is kept at bay longer than any other base combo I’ve ever used – I think even longer than more heavy duty foundations. The result is fresh and undetectable but so long lasting. It’s the dream duo! I even tested in last weeks extreme heat and I felt confident for hours on end that it was staying put. I’m actually surprised when I look in the mirror to find it still looking so good – I’m so used to my face melting in the summer!

Primer – The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer
Base – Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturiser

These two products individually are brilliant, but as a pairing, I can’t get enough! They’re an absolute dream team. Have you tried either?

I love The Ordinary’s skincare products but I haven’t tried any of their primers yet. Their foundations are surprisingly good so I’ll have to pick this primer up to go with them x

    • As a brand, I’m super impressed by them! Foundation is next on my list!
