how to make a casual outfit interesting

When it comes to weekend dressing, I’m the ultimate in lazy style.

My comfiest jeans, a loose knit and usually, a pair of trainers. Comfortable and practical, but never glamorous – there are times when I wish I’d just ramped it up a notch. As the weather turns ever so slightly milder in the UK (on Thursday it hit 15 celsius!), I’ve been pulling out a few wardrobes faves that haven’t graced my body since October time. In an attempt to step out of my usual Sunday routine, this weekend I was determined to make casual interesting.

Something I couldn’t compromise on was comfort, that’s for sure. As per Ross Gellar, I’m definitely still carrying a little ‘holiday weight’, and so my first must was my favourite blue jeans. Mumsy? Most definitely, but infinitely comfortable, even straight out the wash. I joke that when I wear these, I look like I’m off to pick the kids up from school, but at nearly 28 years old, thats quite alright.

My favourite piece of knitwear lately has been this bargain buy that I picked up in a shop I really don’t tend to check out…ever. But Peacocks provied me with this loose, but not too baggy, roll neck plain black jumper and I’ve lived in it this winter. At just £16 (and now £10 in the sale!), it’s definitely had it’s fair share of wear and I won’t be packing it away any time soon. I love to team it with black skinnies and my pink Reiss coat for a super simple look.

So how did I take such a dull outfit up a level? Let’s take footwear to start. I love a pointed shoe – a flat, a heel, boots, you name it. I got these patent beauties (an acquired taste perhaps!) for Christmas from Sam. They’re ASOS and I actually wanted the ones with the matte leather and ponyskin tongue, but sadly they’d sold out. He opted for these shiny numbers and they totally work. With rolled up, relaxed jeans, they add a toughened edge to my basic outfit. The heel height is spot on to give you that wiggle when you walk, but by no means a tottering feeling. They look great with black skinnies too and I’m on the hunt for the perfect Mom’s to wear with them.

Leather jacket – River Island | Jumper – Peacocks | Jeans – Marks and Spencer
Boots – ASOS (similar)| Bag – Dorothy Perkins (similar) | Sunglasses – ASOS

To finish off, I grabbed my leather jacket – a trusty favourite but I always feel it adds that little something to an outfit. In fact, I hardly wore it due to the mild weather on the south coast, but a little bit of pretentious shoulder robing never does anyone any harm, right?
