driving the maine coast

I’ll admit, this blog post has a pretty ambiguous title.

It’s going to be the last in my series of USA posts – you can find the rest here, here, here, here and here – phew! In this post, I wanted to share a few photos from the two days that Sam and I hired our own car and went adventuring without the rest of the group. Maine is an enormous state, so we took a tiny chunk of the coastline to explore.

On our first day, after starting with a diner breakfast (maple syrup pancakes and iced coffee), we headed down to Old Orchard Beach. A typical American seaside town – pretty tacky and definitely a place where local teens come for the summer, we didn’t stay long. A few photos, a peek at the pier and a diet coke break was all we needed to see! After that, we drove along the coastal road, stopping at York, a slightly more upmarket town set on a rolling white sand beach. We finished up with an ice cream at a place local to us I kept spotting – the Americans really know how to do ice cream! Everywhere in the US takes a long time to get to – and we happily enjoyed the drives, stopping where we fancied and taking the days easy. These two days were probably the best of the trip for me!

Day two, we headed north of Portland, starting in Bath. Bath is a beautiful little town, where we stopped for a coffee and a browse, picking up some vintage maps of the area to frame when we got home. We then headed to Wiscassett – where Red’s Eats is. An almost world-famous lobster shack, where we queued for over an hour in the midday heat for a $20 lobster roll! Such tourists, but so worth it. After that, we took a leisurely drive up the coast further to Popham Beach. A state park that my Mum had told us about, it was worth the drive and entry fee. A gorgeous and spacious beach, we sat and people watched before deciding to head back.

It’s days like these on holiday which are the best. No pressure, just taking the car and heading where you please. My ideal trip!
