seaplaning over the lake region, maine

In my last post about our USA trip, I showed you the beautiful Thomas Pond that we were lucky enough to spend a few weeks at this summer at.

Not a bunch to sit still for long, we’re always exploring the areas we visit. On our first day in town, we jumped in the car and headed down to the lakeside town of Naples. The local area surrounding our accomodation is known as the Lake Region. There are more than 80 square miles of lakes spread over 900 square miles of land in the area – too much lake to comprehend! Naples is a small, picturesque lakeside town which is home to Rick’s Cafe (a typical American watering hole with solid, American food), a couple of ice cream bars and a few knick knack stores. It’s also where you can take a trip in a 1970s seaplane, over the Lake Region. And that’s exactly what we did.

In groups of two and three, we squeezed into the small interior with our pilot. The interior can only be described as vintage, but it definitely added to the authenticity of the trip. In the back, I snapped away at the view – too many to share. Our pilot offered to take us over our house, on Thomas Pond, to see it in aerial. The smaller islands you can see in the photos, he explained, were used during WW2 for bombing practice.

The beautiful views and local knowledge were a real highlight of our trip. Something we definitely won’t forget, and something I’d love to do again!
