It’s about time I continued with my posts about our USA trip. With a busy schedule and an influx of Autumn themed inspiration, I took a detour, but let’s get back on track. If you require a Netflix-esque ‘previously on’, head to my Travel tab up top to see the first few US installments. After the wedding and our week in New York state, we took a day of driving and headed north, to a state I felt like I’d been to before.
My Mum has been visiting Maine for years now after first coming on an exchange with her old job. My Nan and Dad had both been with her a few times each and now it was our turn to see why she kept heading back. We’d booked a house on a lake – Thomas Pond, which is in the Sebago Lake region. Maine is an enormous state and is pretty rural. The lake region seems neverending and you could drive for hours on the big wide roads, lined with tall evergreens, never reaching the state border. I had high expectations for Maine and it was pretty much what I was anticipating. They call it Vacationland over there, and I can see why. Everything is very picturesque – so tranquil and beautiful. The lakes in particular – I must have taken twenty of the same shot each day. The changing weather meant we got to experience some really unique sights over Thomas Pond which I hope I’ve shown in my photos!
This first post gives you just a taste of our accommodation. A beautiful four bedroom weatherboard house situated right on the lake. A completely typical Maine abode. Complete with kayaks and it’s own pontoon, it was the ultimate American lakeside summer. We enjoyed evening drinks watching the sun go down, and morning coffee just as the sun first peeped out, hiding inside from the summer storms rolling in over the water and many afternoons paddling around in the kayaks looking for wildlife. I thoroughly appreciated how lucky we were at the time but there’s nothing like looking back on photos to make you realise what an amazing place you were in. It truly was a place that required next to no activity. Sitting watching the lake over a cold drink was more than enough to satisfy. They say life is better on the lake…I’d be inclined to agree!
