My Instagram does a pretty good job at explaining what I’ve been up to since coming home from Copenhagen. And when I say home, I actually mean touching down in the UK for 5 days before heading back to the airport for holiday round three 2015.
This final trip of the summer came with a bit more priority however – my sister married her now-husband in upstate New York at the beginning of the month which meant a pretty great trip for the family. Wanting to have time to relax and enjoy the area around the event, and see a bit of the east coast as well, we planned our holiday accordingly – firstly taking a week in New York state. I, of course, documented our whole trip which saw us travel into the city as well us up to Maine and it’ll all be up here for you to read about over the next few weeks.
Our trip started, as a I say, in New York – flying into JFK late one evening and driving up the Hudson Valley to our first house in New Paltz. My sister described the area as ‘hippiesville’ and I definitely liked the vibe. Not far from the famous Woodstock, and of course Vassar College (where her husband studied and they got married), which has it’s own ‘liberal’ reputation, it had a very chilled atmosphere. I was really taken with the relatively small, but welcoming New Paltz. Known for its unique record stores, there was something unusual about the town and its many independent stores and coffee houses. Although we only spent a few afternoons in the town itself, I felt relaxed and intrigued and would be keen to spend longer in the area. Not far from the Mohonk Mountain Resort, where Stephen King is said to have written The Shining, it has some beautiful countryside around it too – mountainous with stunning views over the Hudson River.
Our house, as shown in the photos, was a beautiful Air BnB place that slept 10 with masses of space and a pool. The perfect place to house the pre-wedding party – there’s plenty similar on Air BnB in the area. Our first week was a good time to relax, grab the best iced latte I’ve ever tasted (quite the claim) and enjoy a day in the city. Which is my next post – 10 hours in NYC. Stay tuned!
